Downgrading Windows Vista Home Basic to XP Pro on Toshiba A205-S5800

Recently, I took the liberty of trying to downgrade my uncle's new computer, the Toshiba A205-S5800, from Vista Home Basic to XP Pro. Since it was a budget computer(~$300), and he doesn't know that much about computers, running Windows Vista Home Basic was just a bit too much for it. I thought it would be a simple process of inserting the CD and go, but little did I how much hassle it actually was to downgrade this particular machine. Well...to make a long story short, I found out that there were a lot of people trying to do the same thing, and after two days of searching and digging, I finally got the machine setup with XP Pro...and with all the drivers working!

Now I'll share with you how I got there so maybe it'll help relieve some stress out there for some of you cause it was a major pain in the ass for me. First of all here's some helpful links I found that helped a little bit, but were not complete.

If you find that my way doesn't work for you, you can to see if the above links can help you.

Step 1. Getting pass the "hard drive not found" error
If you already got XP installed on your machine and just want the drivers, go to step 2. If you don't have an installation CD and want to get one that can pass the "hard drive not found" error, go to step 1a.

The first thing you may notice while installing XP is that it will give you an error saying that it does not detect a hard drive, and exits. This is because the XP disk you have doesn't have the hard disk driver included yet(since this line of notebook have no official support from Toshiba whatsoever). You will need to somehow load the SATA drivers into the system during installation. Here's the SATA drivers.

http://www.thecomingstorm.us/toshiba_A205-S5800_drivers/iastor-sata-drivers.zip

One way is to use an external floppy disk, and press F6 during installation to load the drivers. Since my machine didn't come with a floppy drive, the only other way is to "slipstream" the drivers onto a XP installation CD. I used nLite to slipstream the SATA drivers and it worked perfectly. It's a pretty powerful too and easy to use, pay attention to the "integrate drivers" part, as you can ignore all other configs for this installation. nLite will allow you create a nice bootable CD image for you to burn on to a CD/DVD and now you can boot and have it recognize your hard drive.

Step 1a: Now if you don't want to go through the trouble of slipstreaming, you can go download a pre-configured Win XP Pro installation CD. I found this one on mininova and it worked pretty well.(Try searching for "xp pro sata" on mininova.org). It even have the wireless and network drivers right off the bat. The only thing it was missing was the sound, video, and modem drivers. Which leads us to...

Step 2. Getting the drivers
These are the drivers that finally worked for me. If you are using the slipstream method, you can slip stream these drivers onto your installation disk and have it automatically recognize all the devices during installation. Or you can just download and run them after installation.

Update 4-10-08:
For those of you looking for the wireless and ethernet drivers. Here're the names of the devices from the device manager. You should be able to find them online, but I can't guarantee they'll work, since I used the pre-configured XP Pro installation where both already worked upon install.

Since I used the pre-configured XP Pro installation I mentioned in the post, I didn't bother looking for the wireless and lan drivers. I had failed to find it the first time I tried installing a clean XP Pro. But Here're the names of the devices from the device manager. Maybe it can help.

Thanks Bro for posting this solution. It sure did work for me too.
I had success with my toshiba satellite A205-S5814.
Only issues now are getting the wifi and network card drivers. Everything else i got.
I am using a program called Driver Magician to identify the undetected drivers and then i search the web with that name plus a suffix like "xp driver download".

Thanks again bro for finding this out and taking the time post it.

Realtek wifi Driver

Regarding Model A205-S5814 ... After Installing XP you will not be able to get the correct driver for the realtek wifi device ...
The Toshiba web site corresponding to this model does not have a functional XP driver for this device...
The Realtek Website offers a driver for the RTL8187B wifi card but the driver does not work either.

usb updates

I tried to install Disney Micro drivers for my son's new camera. However, when trying to download photos, it says, "devices not detected". After calling Disney Micro support, they said Toshiba commonly has this problem. The problem is typically solved after updating the usb driver. How the heck do I do that? I am techno-retarded and could use any help you can provide. Thanks in advance.

What model is your computer?

What model is your computer? Here's a post I found with some discussion on usb drivers for Toshiba laptop. See if it can help with what you need.

usb updates

Thanks for the tip, however, the downloads did not work. I have a Satellite A205-S5800 with Windows Home Vista (32 bit). Another other tips? Thanks again.
Dee

I can't seem to find any

I can't seem to find any information about the usb driver update you are talking about. The only other thing I can suggest is if you haven't updated Vista SP1, try that. And here's another link I found about Disney Pix Micro Vista driver. Sorry I can't be of any more help as I don't have a Disney Micro or Vista machine to test out your problem first hand. Good luck!

A205-S5800 to Xp - Modem device on High Definition Audio Bus

I have everything working OK except for one unknown device and that is the "Modem device on High Definition Audio Bus". Does anyony have any thoughts about what driver it might be looking for?

Here is the proceedure that worked for me.
1. Used nLite to create a Xp install disk with SATA support.
2. Installed Xp Pro
3. Installed and ran Everest Ultimate Edition (Free download) via USB.
4. The Everest output lists the drivers needed (ex. My Network adapter is Realtek RTL8139/810x) and then download and install via the USB.
5. Once the Network driver was installed I could then download and install the other missing drivers directly from the notebook internet connection.

Here's the nlite guide which

Here's the nlite guide which is pretty helpful for me when I attempted this. link. Just follow the guide and try injecting the drivers into the os. If it's the drivers you are looking for then sorry I can't help you there, this guide is for the Toshiba A205 models. You can try using the drivers found on this page to see if it works. Or keep digging the internet until you find it. It took awhile for me to find most of the drivers in on this post too.

cant Get pass the "hard drive not found" error - Blue screen!

Hi Chao,

I have a A205-S5825 and I have tried to install XP using Usb Floppy with the drivers you metioned:
http://www.thecomingstorm.us/toshiba_A205-S5800_drivers/iastor-sata-drivers.zip

XP displays 4 different drivers that it found on my floppy. I have tried them all and I get blues screens every time

Any idea?
tks so much

I think I've read a few place

I think I've read a few place while researching for this topic that people were getting the "blue screen" while using floppy or usb to install the drivers. I found that only way that have gotten the most success is using "slipstreaming" method using nLite. If you have your own XP I think using slipstream is the way to go. It's fairly easy to do. Here's another tutorial I found walking you through the slipstreaming process. The only other way that I know of, as mentioned in this post, is to download the preconfigured xp cd. I've installed the one I mentioned in this post on a couple computers already and they are still working fine. Hope that helps, good luck.

Tks so much!

I will try that!!
tks again

What about a Windows XP Home Edition Version

I need a slipstream XP HOME EDITION ISO image for the Toshiba Satellite A205-S5825, not the XP PRO EDITION version. Can someone please provide a link to that?

Toshiba A205-S5841: XP Driver for Wireless & Lan Netwprk Adapter

I have downgrade Vista Premium to XP Pro for my Toshiba A205-S5841. However, I have spent a few days to find the right XP drivers for the Wireless and Lan Netwprk Adapter but really go no way. I really appreciate if there is someone who can help me out of this. Many thanks in advance.
Jay

Have you tried the drivers

Have you tried the drivers mentioned in the post? ftp://210.51.181.211/cn/wlan/RTL8187B_driver_only.zip. If that doesn't work, see if you can find out what the device names are. I did a spec search for your machine, it said it has an Atheros 802.11g Wireless. So maybe this driver might work?

hd driver

does this driver work for the toshiba satellite A200-25v series my laptop uses the same hard drive but i just wanna check before i go around and play

I didn't try it with any

I didn't try it with any other model except with the one mentioned in the article, so sorry I can't help you there. Maybe someone else who have tried it can answer this one?

Different Install

As an owner of this model, I really appreciate this fine article. However, the install process didn't work for me. I made about a dozen coasters before I found the solution that worked for me.
1) Use nlite to install the SATA drivers as TEXT
2) Then make a second copy of the SATA drivers elsewhere on the PC.
3) Copy the SATA drivers AGAIN, only this time as PNP.
4) Set nlite to create an ISO.
5) Use Deep Burner to burn the iso to disc.

Didn't even need to press F6. It worked that well.
I'm going to make another, only this time installing the wireless driver so I can more easily continue once the setup is complete.
This is much easier and it really worked. Hope it works for you, too.

I also tried several times

I also tried several times making alot of platters...

I tried your suggestion mike, and it worked the first time.

Thanks
